Save Our Spit

The Association has been heavily involved in the Save our Spit Association. A fight to stop a massive Cruise Ship Terminal being placed in the Seaway and occupying large sections of Public Open Space and Doug Jennings Park! Thanks to the weight of public opinion, economical and environmental issues the CST proposal has been dropped with the Beattie Government announcing this prior to the election. It's all about timing! Through the combined efforts of many thousands of interested locals, tourists and the dedication of the SOSA committee the Cruise Ship Terminal was finally scuttled. The fight continues though... Developers continue to pressure the State Government to give them large chunks of your public open space on The Spit. Apart from the massive commercial development that dominates the southern end of The Spit, some developers have their eyes set on the Marine Stadium. The only 'free' anchorage protected on both sides from prevailing winds. Also known as 'Bums Bay', it is a refuge for many (low budget) yachties for public casual mooring. Frequented by many holiday sailors and families this safe anchorage must be protected from massive private development and commercialisation.
